CHAPTER EIGHT
Jennaâs outburst signaled the end of the memorial. It had gone from a wholesome, heartwarming way for the town to come together in the midst of a tragedy to a complete circus as people began to gossip about his private life.
Marcy asked Lydia to wait for her while she went to say goodbye to the woman she had helped set the event up with, so Lydia lingered with her candle at the edge of the pavilion. She looked around for Ben Cassidy, not sure if she should expect him to pop up out of the crowd and either talk to her about the restaurant or try to wrangle a meeting out of her, but he seemed to have vanished.
âAll right, letâs go,â Marcy said as she approached out of the crowd. âPoor Meredith is cornered by people asking if sheâs all right, and another coworker is giving Jenna a ride home, so I think itâs fine if I leave. Tonight was a mess, and I want to get out of here.â
Marcy followed Lydia home and parked next to her in the driveway. Lydia could tell she was tense and upset, and started making tea right away when they got inside the house.
âBefore you say anything, I know none of that was my fault, but oh my goodness,â Marcy breathed as she sat down at the kitchen table. âI feel so embarrassedâand so bad for Meredith that she had to find out like that. I donât think Iâve ever disliked someone so strongly, so quickly after meeting them, as I dislike Jenna.â
âI have to admit, I didnât fully realize how bad she was until tonight,â Lydia said. âIâm not saying I didnât believe you, but I definitely wasnât prepared for her. I should have realized something was up with her; she almost ran into me when she was turning into the parking lot, then came over to shout and swear at me like it was my fault. Iâm almost certain she drove to the memorial drunk.â
âOh my gosh, she did what?â Marcy asked, sitting up straighter.
Lydia related the incident in detail as she made them tea. She wasnât usually one for gossip, but she wasnât even sure if this counted, and it felt good to share the absurd interaction with someone. Jenna wasnât just a rude person; it was clear to Lydia that she had much more serious issues going on.
âHonestly, I wouldnât be surprised if sheâs the one who killed him, and she did it because he bumped into her and didnât apologize or something equally as inane,â Marcy muttered. âBetween the incident with the cars and her going completely off the rails at the memorial tonight, I certainly wouldnât feel safe working with her even if Meredith reopens the store and still wants me to join the team.â
âI think that by now, Meredith has more than enough grounds to fire her,â Lydia said.
âI feel so bad for her,â Marcy said with a groan. âCan you imagine finding out
